I felt so uncomfortable in the screening of the Madoka movies because when Mami died, the audience cheered. Literally cheered.

Wow… and yet, I’m not surprised.
It seems like Madoka nurtures a mentality that it’s not realistic (or worth watching) if no dies. Even I’ve noticed that post-Madoka, I ended up trying to justify the magical girl series I do like by their “darker and edgier” content. This is quite terrible as I really shouldn’t validate shows like Mahou no Mako-chan for her nightmarish transformation sequence or that her first wish upon her magical pendent resulted in the death of two humans. Or, Majokko Megu-chan for the episode where the nun commits suicide by setting herself on fire or for Megu, herself, having to endure a trial by fire. Or, as I’m sure you’ve heard, Minky Momo for getting hit by a toy delivery van.
Once one learns to find entertainment from watching little girls being tortured, it’s a really hard habit to break. So congrats OP, your morals are better then mine.
That’s something part of the fandom nurses. The show itself just makes a point how much of a right full knowing consent is, “the end justifies the means” doesn’t negate that right, and how the lethal results aren’t funny or glorious. It was aired in a late night slot, not amongst magical girl shows for the younger audiences and it wasn’t out to say those shows are inferior for not including death and misery round the clock.
If you have something that’s visually sweet and innocent, some people take deep joy in seeing it corrupted and broken. People cheering on Mami’s death is probably a result of the same sort of trend that made Cupcakes in MLP fandom so famous, and why there are so many grimdark MLP clubs when the show itself is entirely kid friendly.
Sometimes source material really does influence the fandom around it to a negative degree, but usually that’s something resulting from the underlying morals of the story, rather than surface assets of the story like themes, tone or death rates.

This was done for a fanart exchange. I was given littlecloud because we both loved Madoka Magica. :3
